01 ABOUT
Who I am as an artist?
My work is very much concerned about interacting with people - not only with artists, but with all kind and from all cultural backgrounds -. It's important for me in my project and I believe it nurtures my artworks in actual arts, in general.
At this moment, I work in a long-term project called Metamorphemes: Foundations and Perspectives of a Construction (that includes painting, sculpture, installation, music performance and architectural artistic design), very much influenced by architecture. Metamorphemes is a metaphor of an artpiece being as an architectural construction and its transformation in order to include old and new elements at different moments and times, rather than just growing. It's also a metaphor of ourselves being as an artpiece. This project was first officially exhibited as a performance-installation at the Arts Place subway station, during The Culture Days in Montreal 2017, in Canada, but it started earlier with artworks done in Hessen, in Amsterdam and in New York, before going to Montreal. Now it has done a long way, after working and showcasing it in different countries: in Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, the US, Canada, Italy, Serbia, North Ireland, the UK so far and currently Switzerland
After working and showcasing the project out from Canada, close to sixteen months in different parts of Venice and Mestre (Italy), in Belgrade (Serbia), close to Alkmaar (the Netherlands) and in Oaxaca (Mexico) I went back to Belgrade some more months for the winter, worked some months in Belfast (North Ireland), then in Edinburgh, in London, in the South Coast of Oaxaca and in the city of same name, to continue now my work some weeks on METAMORPHEMES in Basel - a city that I used to visit oft after I made a film in the city 19 years ago, as I lived in Strasbourg -.
I've been working in very different geographical spaces with different architectural and historical realities, meeting some artists and discussing with all kind of people, while getting familiar to those regions and getting different perspectives and points of view. For some of the people I met "art" was not a familiar word, for some others, it was frequent to attend art exhibitions. All this has, with no doubt, shaped my artworks and my project and, as mentioned before, it was aimed for me while working in METAMORPHEMES. I wanted to build a project that would be strongly related to those places and somehow also to their people. METAMORPHEMES has happily initiated a dialogue with those different people I've been meeting through it, I believe.
My actual arts project includes different moments of site-specific exhibitions, installations and on stage performances (with music). Because of the nature of METAMORPHEMES, the exhibitions will take place in different kind of sites, as well as the performances.
So, now in Basel, Switzerland I am working on new pieces and looking for the right places to exhibit the artworks.
I am still looking for a big musician or artist who would like to make the mecenas to sponsor the recording of the music (probably Van Morrison would be interested) or a label, from Ireland, from England or from somewhere else to produce it.
I am also doing other new artworks, as well as looking for the places to showcase the project: galleries, museums, concert spaces for the performances, theaters, etc.
Feel free to contact me to talk about possible places, production support and collaborations!
My statement
For me, art is an experience and a way of doing (alone and also in the relationship I build with the others, in the way I do my artworks and projects). I am concerned for the way I do my projects and how I show them once they are done, as well as for the collaborations taking place all along the process, in order to try to propose the "universes" I see through them.
After Second World War we questioned deeply the way art was done, overall in Germany, since there had been a misuse in the comprehension and practice of arts, starting by the exclusion of many artists being replaced by others that were "too busy" to realize they were also concerned for what went on. In the 1960’s somehow we came to wonder if art was the reflection of our societies, but we didn't go forward...
I have the impression that art, today, has to be reconsidered as central in society, and also in the way it’s been approached and thought. It has to give us not just an aesthetic foundation on what’s beauty and what is not but, in my way of seeing it, in the contrary: it has to open us to new perspectives, so we can widen our own point of view.
My art approach deals with interpretation and re-interpretation: from my point of view, what’s accepted in a moment may not be in another one, or in another context or space. My artworks deal with these questions constantly, but in a non-stressed-self-criticism. Mistakes are then accepted as part of the process, but the final intention is to better the artpieces, as one would do in an architectural construction normally, rather than hiding the mistakes.
Working in different parts of Venice and Mestre was very interesting to me for METAMORPHEMES, since I could see how different buildings were treated architecturally differently depending on the materials they had originally and, being the buildings so different from one another in the style and architectural answer, one sees that different backgrounds intervened in their architectural landscapes. So these last enriched them and gave them a harmony, what gives the city a magnificent taste of permanent renewal, even though those buildings are so old!
Continuing my work in different parts from Belgrade (Serbia) has later been very stimulating, since the architectural and social context and backgrounds were very contrasting, but the city had some common points with Montreal (Canada) and with Venice and Mestre (Italy), even though those similarities are not so evident.
The visual and music work done in the Netherlands, close to Alkmaar, was later also very constructive: I worked in a complete new geographical and architectural contexte with different architectural and social contextes. In Oaxaca (Mexico) - one of the Mexican cities I grew up in - and in the Oaxacan Coast I worked several months and visited some familiar places that have changed much over the time; seeing the new architectural appearance of some places there and working last year for the first time in Belfast (North Ireland), in Edinburgh and in London (for several months also) has given me another impression on the visual and human relationships to different landspaces. Now coming back to Basel, where the city uses the tramways - rather than the subway as one of the main transports in the city center - has changed my experience of the city in comparition to the years I frequented it, since I was oft driven in car through the city.
These architectural and historical experiences have been very contrasting, but seeing different regions with varied vegetation and social contexts has contributed to shape my artworks. The way in which the people have appreciated METAMORPHEMES and the connections I've established among those places through my artworks, while being in touch with those persons in different realities for some months has also brought a better appreciation on the things that are relevant to them and that I consider in my work.
METAMORPHEMES
METAMORPHEMES: Foundations And Perspectives Of A Construction, as mentioned before, is an actual arts long-term project, influenced by architecture and including paintings, sculptures, installation and music and on stage performances. It was first showcased at the Culture Days in Montreal 2017 (Canada) as a performance-installation that took place at the Place of Arts. It is also a metaphor of an artpiece being as an architectural construction and its transformation in order to include old and new elements at different moments and times, rather than just growing. It's also a metaphor of ourselves being as an artpiece.
METAMORPHEMES is a project radical in its methods and in its composition. It questions arts in their forms, since they intend to be universal, but they seem to forget oft to affirm the universality of the human value. METAMORPHEMES questions the ideal of universality that has characterized arts and on which contemporary art is founded, to propose an actual arts practice founded in an intention to come back to the foundations and motivations of art themselves. It questions the myths of what we´ve called oft in the books "traditions" to come back to the diversity of influences in art. These lasts are effectively universal, because otherwise, by an effect of “too much memory” here and “too little” (as Paul Ricoeur said once) or no memory there, we finish by "making" something else that that we intended, by revendicating the "universality of art”. If it’s not a humanistic and existential affirmation in its diversity and in its need of individuality and one agrees to give place to this diversity of influences and voices, art loses its main reason to exist. This intention is the base of Metamorphemes: an affirmation of the need of complementarity at the center of the artwork, in order to create a constructive dynamic and taking art as a human necessity to think about its possibilities rather than to a unique possibility.

03 BIOGRAFÍA
Tania Mujica-Mota sees her artistic work in general as a communicative interaction (to form-ulate), rather than as a language (ready-made). Her musical work seems like a semi-figurative canvas, and that's not a danger. She found music as she was 6 years old and joined the National Music School in Mexico the following year. Having to take a break 4 years later, Tania Mujica-Mota found it again, as a young adult, to hold it and use it in her artistic work. Influenced by her independent storytelling, her photography work, and her work as an author and vocalist with some musicians, She later also took up an instrument in a practice that allowed her to add a new voice to her own: the "animated guitar," with which Tania Mujica-Mota worked in a duo many times... But what characterizes Tania Mujica-Mota's work in actual music, and in actual arts in general, is, above all, her unorthodox and unsecular narrative tones. Musically illiterate, She uses her existential and auditory wandering to compose sound and imaginative canvases, which summon historical tones with diverse human geographies, in a quite radical and contemporary approach. Music is, after all, Tania Mujica-Mota thinks, a sequel of paint strokes and what they tell us...
Tania Mujica-Mota tends to see her work as a sum of partitions intended to compose more complex works.
